FULLERTON, Calif. - Devin Zaragoza extended her hitting streak to seven games, but errors bit Texas Tech late as the Red Raiders dropped a tough 7-2 decision to a strong Cal State Fullerton (9-6-1) squad late Friday night at Anderson Family Field.
Tech held a 2-1 lead after four innings and the tally was even heading into the bottom of the sixth, but three Red Raider miscues resulted in five unearned Titan runs to give Fullerton the win in a hard-fought contest. The Titans are the ninth team this season that has either been ranked or receiving votes to beat Tech as Fullerton had been ranked up until this week.
Jennifer Corkin went 2-3 with a double and an RBI, while Leah Legler also went 2-3 to lead the way for Tech. Zaragoza and Montana Patin each added singles as Tye Coats (1-5) picked up the loss in the circle.
The first three innings were stalemate as neither squad was able to get anything across. Tech finally broke out with a pair of runs on four hits in the fourth. Legler started things with an infield single and came in on a hustling play a short time later. Corkin eventually singled to score Zaragoza. The Titans' Christine Hiner fought back to strike out three-straight Red Raiders to put a halt on a promising inning.
Fullerton came back in the bottom of the inning with a homerun and then tacked in another homerun to even the score after five innings. Corkin opened the sixth with a double to left field to give Tech had runners on first and second with two away, but the Titan defense tightened up to end the inning.
Coats retired the first Fullerton hitter in the bottom of the inning, but three errors followed and the Titans plated five unearned runs in the inning to steal the win.
The Red Raiders will return to action tomorrow morning when they look to avenge an earlier loss against Loyola-Chicago at 11 a.m. CT. Fans can follow the action at www.texastech.com.
