MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Day two at the 2008 Blue-Gray Classic proved huge for the No. 25 Texas Tech men's tennis team as they edged No. 19 Virginia Commonwealth, 4-2. The Red Raiders advance to the semi-finals where they will take on No. 28 Auburn at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow, Sat., March 15.
After a snag in the top three singles matches yesterday against Wisconsin, the Red Raiders came out strong and ready to play. Senior Lenoir Ramos defeated VCU's Emil Lindgren first at No. 3, followed by junior Sinisa Markovic at No. 2 over Thibaut Charron, and the No. 35-ranked senior Bojan Szumanski rolling past Damien Lacombe at No. 1, all in straight sets.
Ahead 3-0, the Rams fired back winning at No. 4 and 6 positions, with Sebastien Ripoll handing sophomore Michael Breler his first loss of the spring. It was junior Christian Rojmar who stepped up for the Raiders to clinch the match for the first time this season, as he sunk in Tech's third point over VCU's Bobo Delemark 6-4 in the third set in the No. 5 position.
"This was the biggest win of the season thus far," exclaimed Coach Tim Siegel. "Yesterday we lost in the No. 1, 2 and 3 spot, but today those guys really turned things around and set the tone for us. Winning today following an emotional win last night showed me that these guys will not settle and want to get better and better. Having players like Ilya yesterday and Christian today step up and clinch matches for us is big, and it will definitely help build their confidence as players in future matches."
