LUBBOCK, Texas - For the second day in a row, Texas Tech and No. 7 Texas A&M (31-6, 3-0) battled right down to the wire before the Aggies squeaked by with a 3-1 win Saturday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field. With the victory, A&M claims the season series after Tech won the series last year.
Texas Tech (7-24, 0-2) came out swinging out of the gates with two of the first three hitters coming up with hard hits. Leah Legler opened the contest with a sharp single to center before promptly stealing second. Two batters later, Montana Patin knocked her team-leading sixth double of the season in to left center to bring in Legler and give the Red Raiders the early 1-0 edge.
A&M answered back in the second with an RBI double from Natalie Villareal. Tech settled back in and kept the Aggies quiet the rest of the inning. They would not stay silent for long, however, as they added a run in both the third and fourth innings to take a 3-1 advantage.
The Red Raiders had opportunities to cut into things, but A&M's Rhiannon Kliesing responded to get the necessary outs and leave Tech runners stranded.
Robyn Wike had a pair of hits in three trips to the plate to lead the Red Raiders with a 2-3 showing. Patin finished 1-2 with her RBI double, while Legler also had a hit. Tye Coats (3-10) gave up a pair of runs to get saddled with the loss, while Ashly Jacobs went four solid innings in relief.
Alex Reynolds was 2-2 from the plate to lead the way for A&M, while Kliesing (9-4) threw a complete game to pick up the win.
Tech will enjoy the Easter holiday before returning to Rocky Johnson field Tuesday for a double header with in-state foe UTEP. Start times are scheduled for 3 and 5 p.m. CT. Fans can follow the action live via www.texastech.com.
