LUBBOCK, Texas - Backed by two first-half Chessa Purser goals, the Texas Tech soccer team won its second match of the spring, defeating West Texas A&M, 2-1, Saturday in Canyon.
Purser, who holds the school's record for most goals in a match, scored her first goal off a Katie Hinds assist in the 15th minute. Ten minutes later, Purser created her own space to find the back of the net for her second goal of the match. West Texas A&M would add a goal in the second-half.
"This was big for us because it gave us an opportunity to play as a team before spring break," Tech assistant coach Aaron Gordon said. "We knew heading into the match that West Texas A&M would play us tough because of the way they had previously played this spring. This was another game where we knew the competition would be tough, but we did enough to find a way to win."
West Texas A&M had previously defeated Texas State, 3-0, earlier this spring, while also falling by a goal to Houston.
The Red Raiders controlled the ball for most of the match, attempting 10 shots-on-goal to the Lady Buffaloes' three. Tech also had 12 corner kicks to WTAMU's zero.
Tech improves to 2-0 on the spring. The Red Raiders will take near a month off before traveling to face TCU April 5 at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas.
