WACO, Texas - Timely home runs from Jennifer Bowers and Robyn Wike helped pave the way for Texas Tech softball in a 4-1 victory over Baylor Saturday afternoon at Getterman Stadium. With the win, Tech has now won two of its last three meetings with the perennial-power Bears (22-16, 4-8).
After struggling to bring runners across in its last couple games, that was not the case for Tech (16-32, 4-9) Saturday as it advanced runners in key times and took advantage of timely hits to pick up the win.
The game looked to be a pitcher's duel early on as Ashly Jacobs and Baylor's Kirsten Shortridge kept the offenses quiet through the first two innings. Robyn Wike opened up the third with a bang, however, as she deposited a Bear offering well beyond to wall in left center for her second homer of the year to extend her career-best hitting streak to four games and give Tech the early 1-0 lead.
The Red Raider lead would be short lived as Brette Reagan led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run of her own the even the tally at 1-1. Jacobs and the Tech defense quickly settled in and kept the Bears quiet the rest of the way, not allowing a Baylor runner to advance past second base.
Jennifer Corkin opened up the top of the fourth with a single to help jump start a big inning for Tech. Jenny Krause came in to pinch run and came across a short time later when Bowers hit a rocket over the wall in right center to put two more runs on the board. Elizabeth Eimen followed with a single right after Bowers' homer and came in on a two-out double from Whitney Riley to give the Red Raiders the 4-1 lead, and cap the final scoring of the game.
Corkin finished 2-4 to help pace Tech, while Bowers was 1-3 with two RBI. Eimen, Wike, Riley and Devin Zaragoza all finished 1-3 as well. Jacobs (8-13) scattered six hits while striking out three for the complete-game win.
Tech will look to complete the weekend sweep tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT. Fans can catch the action live via www.texastech.com.
