Schaefer, Kennedy Named Student-Athletes of the Year

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech track athlete Julianne Kennedy and football player David Schaefer were named the Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Year Monday night at the annual Academic Awards Reception at United Spirit Arena.
Kennedy has a 3.88 GPA and will graduate in May with a degree in exercise sport science and minor in nutritional studies. She has received numerous academic honors during her career at Texas Tech, including six times being named to the president's list and two times to the dean's list. Additionally, Kennedy holds school records in the pentathlon and heptathlon.
Schaefer is graduating in May with a degree in bio-chemistry and currently has a 3.74 grade point average. Recently honored with induction into the Texas Tech Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, Schaefer will graduate magna cum laude and has been accepting into medical school for the fall at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center.
Over 200 student-athletes, managers and athletic trainers were honored on three levels of academic achievement - 3.0-3.39 (Merit Award), 3.4-3.74 (High Merit Award) and 3.75-4.0 (Excellence Award). Also recognized on the evening were Champs Life Skills awards for Excellence in Personal Development (Women's Tennis) and the Team Excellence Award (Men's Tennis) for producing the highest graduation and retention rates combined with team GPA.
Soccer team member Megan Hoffert and football player Brian Duncan received the CHAMPS/Like Skills "Good Citizen" awards for their contributions within the community. This is the first year individuals have been recognized.
The Margaret Wilson Award, recognizing two of the top female student-athletes, was presented to Leah Legler (softball) and Alicia Ostmeyer (volleyball) by the award's namesake. Additionally, Wilson makes a donation on behalf of the student-athlete to her respective sport program.
Among the speakers for the event were Texas Tech president Dr. Jon Whitmore, Director of Athletics Gerald Myers and Associate Athletic Director for Student Services John Anderson.
