LUBBOCK, Texas - The smoke has cleared from the NCAA Central Regional and No. 46 Texas Tech women's golf finished the event in 13th place as one of the best seasons in program history came to a close late Saturday night at the Texas Golf and Country Club in Austin. Tech finished the event at plus-52 916.
The Lady Raiders opened the day six strokes back of eighth place, the spot needed to move on to the NCAA Championships. Tech struggled at times through the final round, and it was unable to get the help it needed to move up to the coveted position.
Ulrika Van Niekerk fired the low round of the day with a 75 and was the Lady Raiders' top finisher at nine-over 225 to tie for 30th overall. Dowdy carded a 76 for the final 18 holes to finish at 14-over 230 and tie for 53rd. Right behind her was Gloriana Soto, who shot a 79 and finished the event at 15-over 231 while tying for 55th. Freshman Robyn Scott dropped four strokes from her second-round total to card an 80 for the day and finish at 24-over 240. Alex Gibson concluded Tech's scoring at 30-over 246 after turning in an 86 on the day.
No. 3 UCLA won the event at three-under 861, while No. 6 Purdue finished 10 shots back in second at seven-over 871. No. 11 Denver (882) came in third, while No. 30 TCU (884) finished fourth and No. 24 Texas A&M (885) came in fifth. No. 9 Alabama (896) and No. 29 Texas (899) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, with No. 19 LSU and No. 33 Florida State tying for eighth at 902. The Tigers won a sudden death tiebreaker to earn the spot in the NCAA Championships.
No. 40 North Carolina State and No. 49 Nebraska both fell just one stroke shy of the eighth spot with a 903. No. 16 Pepperdine (916) came in 12th, while Tech (916), No. 13 Kent State (919) and No. 42 East Tennessee State (922) finished 13th through 15th respectively.
The bottom section of the team standings saw No. 25 Notre Dame (925), No. 48 Washington (932), Texas State (933), Harvard (937), Illinois State (955) and Fairleigh Dickinson (1033) finish off the results. UCLA's Maria Jose Uribe and Maria Hernandez tied for the top spot in the individual standings at eight-under par 208. A&M's Sarah Zwartynski (even-par 216) was the top finisher among Big 12 competitors at seventh.
Tech will now work on its game this summer before hitting the links again in the fall of 2008. All 10 members of the team return for the Lady Raiders as they look to build off one of the best years in program history.
