LUBBOCK, Texas - "Tomorrow is a new day." The statement could not have rung more true for Laurie Brower. After a pair of challenging par-five holes cost her an 81 for the first round, Brower came back with a vengeance on the second day and posted a one-under par 72 to come in at seven-over 153 for the first two rounds of the Women's U.S. Open in Edina, Minn.
Unfortunately for Brower, those challenging par fives proved costly in her making the cut and playing in the third and fourth rounds with many of the elite names in the sport. Her 153 ended up being just three strokes off the needed position to move on as her experience on one of golf's elite stages came to a close.
Day one produced an up-and-down opener for the former Texas Tech golfer at the challenging par-73 Interlachen Country Club. After taking a hit with a double bogey on the third hole, she settled in with five consecutive par holes. Bad luck came back to bite her again on 13 as she struggled to a triple bogey before finishing the last five holes of the round at par.
The second day proved to be a near complete opposite. A pair of birdies on the second and seventh holes coupled with par on the same hole that she had triple bogeyed yesterday put her at an even-par 37 at the turn. Brower used three birdies and a string of par holes on 14 through 16 to card a one-under par 35 and put her at 72 for the day.
Brower is currently an assistant pro at the Rawls Course.
