LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Softball kicks off its fall schedule in preparation for the 2009 season this weekend as it scrimmages Midland College and Lubbock Christian University. The action is slated to begin Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 at 10 a.m., at Rocky Johnson Field.
Coming off its best conference record in seven years, the Red Raiders are looking forward to getting things underway with eight players returning from last year's squad and the addition of seven newcomers.
"We're competing in our fall season earlier this year than we have in prior years," head coach Teresa Wilson said. "We're anxious to see how our newcomers blend with our veteran talent and to assess where we are heading into the rest of this practice time."
Lubbock Christian will be first up for Tech as the Lady Chaps cross town as the reigning NAIA National Champions, after a remarkable inaugural campaign, going 57-9 last season. Midland College, on the heels of a 42-19 season and its seventh NJCAC Championship, will also head to Lubbock to compete in the practice scrimmages.
Game times on Saturday are at 10 a.m. (TTU vs. LCU), 12:30 p.m. (TTU vs. Midland), and 3:00 p.m. (LCU vs. Midland). Sunday's game times are 11:30 a.m. (TTU vs. Midland), 2:00 p.m. (TTU vs. LCU), and 4:30 p.m. (LCU vs. Midland). There is no fee for the event and is open to the public.
Fall games, which also include a tournament in the Houston area on Sept. 27 and 28, do not count as part of the NCAA schedule of events, but are an excellent way for teams to compete as practice during the off-season. During the Wilson era fall practices and scrimmages have been in October, as coaches determine the timeframe of the off-season, but the move to a September schedule has been made this year.
The 2009 schedule has not been officially announced yet, but will be posted on www.texastech.com as soon as it has been released.
