LEACH ERA HISTORY MADE TONIGHT
History was made tonight at Jones AT&T Stadium as for the first time in the Mike Leach era a starting quarterback missed a start. Junior quarterback Steven Sheffield made his first career start tonight in place of Taylor Potts. Potts was knocked out of the New Mexico game in the second quarter and did not return.
SHEFFIELD TURNS IN HISTORIC FIRST HALF
Steven Sheffield, making his first career start, established a new school record in the first half as he threw for 370 yards and five touchdowns to help guide Tech to a 38-0 halftime lead. Sheffield surpassed B.J. Symons' mark of 367 yards thrown in the second half at Mississippi on Sept. 27, 2003, to earn the school record. Cody Hodge's 356 yards against Sam Houston State in the first half of that contest on Sept. 17, 2005, ranks as the third most yards in a single half.
- Final stat line for Sheffield is 33-of-41 for 490 yards and seven touchdowns.
- Tossed his seventh touchdown pass of the game (tied for second most in school history) with 12:34 remaining in the fourth quarter when he connected with Lyle Leong for a 25-yard TD. Sheffield is the second Tech quarterback this season to throw seven touchdown passes in a game as Taylor Potts did so against Rice back on Sept. 12.
TECH WRECKS K-STATE DEFENSE
The Kansas State defense came into tonight's game with the top pass defense in the Big 12 and ranked third overall in total defense. That all changed tonight in Jones AT&T Stadium. The Texas Tech offense racked up a season-high 739 yards of total offense, including 554 through the air. In all, 12 different receivers caught passes tonight with Detron Lewis leading the way with 100 yards on eight catches. The 739 total yards is the third-highest in school history.
- Combined with the last visit by Kansas State here in 2005, the Red Raiders have torched the Wildcats for 1,423 yards of total offense.
McSACK ATTACK
The defense played one of its best games of the season. The Red Raiders held the Wildcats to 284 total yards which is the second-lowest of the season. The defense picked up two turnovers and registered four sacks. It pushes Tech's total to 18 sacks on the season. Franklin Mitchem, D.J. Johnson and Donnie Carona led the team with five tackles each. In the first half, Tech's swarming defense registered three sacks in the first half (two by Brandon Sharpe) and five tackles for loss. The Red Raiders held KSU to just 55 total yards of offense in the first half.
NOTING THE RED RAIDERS
- Texas Tech got off to a fast start tonight as the Red Raiders took a 7-0 lead on their first drive of the game. Quarterback Steven Sheffield connected with Tramain Swindall for a 52-yard touchdown pass to give the Red Raiders the early lead. The touchdown catch was his fifth of the season.
- Texas Tech took a 14-0 lead with 1:49 remaining in the first quarter when Sheffield connected with Alex Torres for a six-yard TD strike. The touchdown catch was his second of the season and both TD passes have been thrown by Sheffield. The TD drive covered 90 yards on eight plays and marked Tech's longest drive of the year.
- Matt Williams 20-yard field goal with 11:28 remaining in the second quarter gave Texas Tech a 17-0 lead. The field goal make was his third of the season and makes him 3-for-4 on the year. It was his first attempt from 20-29 yards this year.
- Senior defensive end Brandon Sharpe picked up his third sack of the season to end a Kansas State drive midway through the second quarter. Sharpe's sack went down as a 14-yard loss and was the 15th of the season for the Red Raider defense. He added his second
- Junior Detron Lewis helped give Tech a 24-0 lead with 6:49 remaining in the second quarter when he hauled in a four-yard TD pass from Sheffield. The touchdown grab was his third of the year. He picked up his fifth TD (12-yard catch) of the season with 3:52 remaining in the third quarter to help give Tech a 52-7 lead
- Texas Tech's lead grew to 31-0 with 3:59 remaining in the second quarter when he found Jacoby Franks on a deep out pass and Franks scampered into the end zone (72 yards) for the first touchdown of his career. The scoring drive went just two plays for 77 yards and lasted 42 seconds and that tied the second shortest drive (in terms of time) of the year for the Red Raiders. Tech had a 42 second drive last week against New Mexico. The 72-yard catch was also the second longest play of the season for the Red Raiders.
