Dan Spencer made his head coaching debut at the Division I level today and picked up his first career win with a 14-3 decision over Southern Utah. He is the fifth consecutive head coach at Tech to win his coaching debut joining Larry Hays, Gary Ashby, Kal Segrist and Berl Huffman.
The game against Southern Utah marked the first meeting between the two schools on the diamond.
Texas Tech is now 37-23 all-time on Opening Day and 24-5 when opening the season at home.
Chris Richburg hit the first home run of the season and it was the ninth home run of his four-year career at Tech.
Texas Tech started three freshmen today and the marked the most since Opening Day 2006 when Roger Kieschnick, Drew Evans and Willie Rueda earned starts as freshmen.
