Lady Raiders Drop Close Match to Texas

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Lady Raiders took the No. 32 Texas to the wire in its first Big 12 home match at the McLeod Center but fell 4-3.
Tech (4-7, 0-3) started the match strong as No.57 Kelsy Garland and Samantha can der Drift beat Vanja Corovic and Marija Milic 8-3. Garland and van der Drift push their record to 8-3 and are on a five-match win streak.
The No. 3 doubles match had Tech's Natalie Leitch and Simone Templeton defeated Amanda Craddock and Caroline Larsson 8-6 to clinch the doubles point for Tech.
The Lady Raiders swept the doubles point as Stefanie Peana and Kerryn Potgieter won 8-6 over Maggie Melio and Krista Damico
Tech took a 2-0 lead as Garland smoked Larsson in straight sets 6-4, 6-0. She pushes her record to 7-4 and 1-2 in conference.
Texas tied the match at 2-2 as the won the next two matches. Maggie Melio beat Kerryn Potgieter 6-4, 6-3 followed by Corovic defeating van der Drift in two sets 7-6, 6-1.
Leitch gave the Lady Raiders a lead in a tough three set match. Craddock took the first set 6-3 before Leitch took the final two sets 6-4, 6-1.
The Longhorns pushed the match to the final point as Dimanico beat Templeton 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 to tie the match at 3-3. Lancaster pulled out the final match over Peana 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
"I have to give it to Texas, they played more clutch than we did today," head coach Todd Petty said after the match. "I thought Sam (van der drift) and Kelsy (Garland) played well and going 3-0 in conference against three of the top teams in the conference is great. Natalie (Leitch) really stepped up today. She struggles early in the season but has come on strong."
Tech fell to a tough No. 5 Baylor squad on Friday to fall to 0-2 in conference play.
The only win for the Lady Raiders came from the No. 57 duo of van der Drift and Garland. The duo beat No. 55 Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk 8-3.
Tech will play in the in the San Diego Collegiate Invite on Wed., March 18 - March 20.
