LUBBOCK, Texas - Despite the cold and windy weather surrounding the Lubbock area, the No. 32-ranked Texas Tech men's tennis team won every point on its way to a 7-0 victory Saturday at the McLeod Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders would get off to a quick start in doubles as Tech won the doubles point for the fifth-consecutive match. Using a different lineup than usual, Tech got wins from both Raony Carvalho and Christian Rojmar at the No. 1 position and David Gonzalez and Gonzalo Escobar at the No. 2 slot.
In his first duals match of the spring, James Wilson would keep Tech's momentum going in singles as he dropped Dusan Savkovic, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 6 position. Carvalho would give Tech another point minutes later in the No. 1 spot as he defeated Maciej Bogusz, 6-2, 6-2. Michael Breler would clinch the match for Tech a little later, downing Diego Snyder, 6-2, 6-1.
With the match already decided, Rojmar, after already winning the first set, 6-0, overcame a 5-1 deficit in the second set to win six-consecutive games to win, 7-5. Escobar would finish off Richard Filkuka, 6-2, 6-2, just seconds before Sinisa Markovic defeated Mario Janjic, 6-2, 6-2, to complete the match.
With the win, the Red Raiders improve to 11-7 on the season, while Lamar drops to 7-7 overall. Tech has also won four of its last five matches.
"I was proud of the way we played today," Tech head coach Tim Siegel said. "We had some tough conditions today, but I thought the biggest thing was that we kept our concentration. It was important that we got this match in this weekend, so that we could have some preparation before beginning Big 12 play at Texas A&M next week."
The Red Raiders open Big 12 action next weekend, traveling to College Station, Texas, on April 3, to face the No. 14 Texas A&M. Tech's next home match is not until April 14 when the No. 10-ranked Baylor Bears come to Lubbock.
