Esmir Rizvic Named First Team Academic All-Big 12

Lubbock, TX - The Big 12 Conference has named 28 student-athletes to the 2009 Academic All-Big 12 Men's Basketball Team, the league office announced. Two Texas Tech players have earned high academic honors.
Senior Esmir Rizvic was named to the first team and sophomore Mike Singletary earned second team honors.
Esmir, the Zenica, Bosnia native, entered Texas Tech after playing two seasons at Gulf Coast Community College where he averaged 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Commodores. He has played in 54 games and has started 20 games as a Red Raider.
Esmir, a member of the Bosnian National Team, will graduate in May with his degree in University Studies. He will return home after graduation and is planning to play professionally in Europe.
Mike, an Arts and Sciences major, is completing his second season at Texas Tech after graduating from Kingwood High School in Humble, Texas. He has played in 30 games this season and is averaging 11 points per game.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and media relations offices, the men's basketball academic all-league squad consisted of 17 first team members combined with 11 on the second team. First team members have recorded a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second team are those with a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or in the two previous semesters and have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
