LUBBOCK, Texas - For the fifth consecutive season, the Texas Tech men's team will compete in the championship match of the HEB Tournament of Champions Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas, as the Red Raiders breezed through the first two rounds Friday, defeating BYU and South Alabama both by a score of 4-0.
The Red Raiders opened the day with a good start in doubles as both its No. 1 tandem of Raony Carvalho and Christian Rojmar and the No. 3 duo of Gonzalo Escobar and David Gonzalez won matches to give Tech the doubles point.
Tech would keep the momentum going in singles with its top of the lineup claiming straight-set victories. Carvalho topped Roman Warias 6-3, 6-3, while Sinisa Markovic downed Evan Urbina, 6-2, 6-1. The deciding point came from David Gonzalez, who dropped Daniel Hwang also in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
The day's second match would begin with singles, instead of the doubles portion, which worked in Tech's favor as Markovic, Rojmar, Gonzalez and Michael Breler took straight-set victories to end the match without it having to advance to doubles. Tech was also leading the two other singles matches at the time of conclusion.
With both wins, the Red Raiders (6-3) are now currently riding a five-match winning streak heading into tomorrow's championship match.
"I thought we played very well today," Tech head coach Tim Siegel said. "Both BYU and South Alabama are very good teams, so it was good to pull out two wins today. I thought we played very well and were focused. We will have our hands full tomorrow, though, as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is one of the top teams in the nation, so we will have to keep that same focus."
The Red Raiders will meet the host Islanders at noon Saturday in the championship match at the HEB Tennis Center. The two schools both faced each other in the finals last season with the Red Raider prevailing, 4-2.
