LUBBOCK, Texas - Cody Davis picked off Stefan Loucks in the fourth quarter and returned it 100 yards to break open a close Texas Tech Spring Game as the White team topped the Red squad, 19-7, Saturday afternoon at Jones AT&T Stadium.
Taylor Potts completed 20-of-27 passes for 211 yards and a touchdown for the Red squad. His lone TD was a six-yard pass to Tramain Swindell on the game's opening drive.
Baron Batch would move the White team closer in the second quarter on a seven-yard run to make the score 7-6 after a missed Donnie Carona extra point.
Steven Sheffield, who began the game quarterbacking the White squad, found Detron Lewis for a four-yard touchdown off a fade pass to the far corner to make the score 13-7 just before halftime. Sheffield finished the day 11-of-18 for 99 yards and a touchdown.
Both offenses would find trouble completing drives, however, as the defense accounted for eight sacks between both teams and two interceptions, including Davis' 100-yard scamper to open the fourth quarter. Blake Collier had the game's other interception for the Red team.
Batch and Harrison Jeffers would lead the offensive attack on the ground as the duo accounted for 81 yards on 18 carries and 52 yards off nine receptions through the air, while splitting time between both teams. Jeffers' seven receptions led all receivers.
Detron Lewis made four receptions for 53 yards, while Blake Kelley and Cornelius Douglas accounted for 45 and 37 yards respectively for the White squad. Austin Zouzalik and Edward Britton totaled 67 and 43 yards off five receptions each for the Red squad.
Defensively, safety Brett Dewhurst led the White team with seven solo tackles, including a tackle for loss, while linebacker Marlon Williams and Davis totaled six and five tackles, respectively. Williams also had two tackles for loss and a pass breakup. Linebacker Tyrone Sonier led the Red team with eight tackles, including six solo, and a sack. Defensive ends Brandon Sesay and Brandon Sharpe each recorded two sacks.
The game was called midway through the fourth quarter because the two teams had reached the 120-play limit.
The Red Raiders complete their spring drills next week with three remaining practices scheduled for Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Tech kicks off the 2009 regular season Sept. 5 at home against North Dakota.
