LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior Alex Watkins hit her sixth home run of the year but it was not enough, as North Texas picked up six runs on eight hits to defeat the Texas Tech Red Raiders, 6-1.
North Texas (22-18) jumped out to the lead in the second, picking up three runs to take the lead on two hits and a Red Raider error. In the bottom of the frame, Watkins stepped to the plate and knocked a solo home run past the second fence to pull Tech (13-30) within two, 3-1.
With neither team scoring in the third, the Mean Green responded in the fourth when Courtney Bradshaw singled to lead off the inning. With Bradshaw on, Megan Rupp hit a two-out single followed by a three-run home run by Mariza Martinez to clear the bases and give UNT the lead for good, 6-1.
Tech got six hits on the day, one each from Stephanie Drewry, Watkins, Holley Gentsch, Emily Bledsoe, Danielle Matthews, and Ashley Hamada. Ashly Jacobs pitched four innings giving up 6 runs and striking out five. Watkins, who came on in relief of Jacobs, pitched three solid innings giving up no runs and striking out three.
The Red Raiders will travel to Texas A&M and battle the Aggies on Friday and Saturday before heading to San Marcos for a doubleheader with Texas State on Monday. Fans can follow the action at www.texastech.com.
