NEW ORLEANS - Amid the clanking of weights in the Human Performance Center at the Radisson New Orleans Privateer Invitational, Texas Tech (1-3) picked up its first win of the season in Volleyball this afternoon, beating Southeastern Louisiana, 3-0.
After a sloppy start to set one, junior middle blocker Barbara Conceicao's net play turned the tide in favor of the Red Raiders as she and Karlyn Meyers paired up on block assists to take the lead at 12-11. Caroline Witte then served five consecutive points to take the lead, 17-11, and Tech never significantly looked back to break through for its first set win of the young season.
Conceicao finished with 9 kills (.353), two block solos and four block assists, while Amanda Dowdy added seven kills, seven digs and five block assists. Freshman Tory Vaughan led the Red Raiders with 10 digs across the back row. Sophomore middle hitter Michelle Kuester was a perfect two-for-two in kills and added three block solos, one of them coming at a crucial time is set two, which was won by Tech after staring down a set-point by the Lady Lions at 25-24.
Witte finished with a pair of service aces to lead the team in that statistical category and Hayley Ball came off the bench with three kills and finished the evening with a .375 hitting average. The Red Raiders out-blocked the Lady Lions 12-4 on the afternoon. Tech will face Bowling Green tomorrow at 1 p.m. and then will take on the host, New Orleans at 7 p.m. in the conclusion of the tournament.
The Human Performance Center gym, which houses the campus strength-training facility, is home court to New Orleans Volleyball (basketball plays at the Lakefront Arena) and does take some getting used to, as the sound of free weights dropping constantly throughout the match had some fans slightly unnerved.
