LUBBOCK, Texas - Facing possibly its toughest field all season, the Texas Tech women's golf team struggled in the opening round of the Landfall Tradition on Friday, firing a 28-over 316 at the Pete Dye Course in Wilmington, N.C.
With all but two of the 18 teams entered having advanced to a NCAA Regional a year ago, the Lady Raiders were left little room for error as they finished 17th overall after only one round. Only four teams finished with a score lower than 10-over, meaning Tech has a chance to make up some ground in the tournament's final two rounds scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
Gabby Dominguez finished with Tech's best opening round as the sophomore fired a 2-over 74 that was good enough to place her just inside the top 20 in a tie for 19th overall. Dominguez trails the individual leaders by only four strokes.
Paloma Martinez was Tech's next-best player with a 7-over 79. Kim Kaufman wrapped the round two shots higher at a 9-over 81, while Deborah DeVilla was Tech's last score included with a 10-over 82. Beverly Mendoza finished 14-over on the round.
Duke and Texas tied for the first-round lead as both posted 3-over 291 days. North Carolina and UCLA trail closely behind with the Tar Heels sitting third at 5-over and the Bruins in fourth at 6-over.
The Lady Raiders will once again tee off from hole No. 10 on Saturday morning. Mendoza is Tech's first scheduled player to reach the tee box at around 9:30 a.m. central time. To keep up with the action, fans can use the live stats application on www.golfstat.com.
