Women's Tennis Advances Six Singles to Round of 32

LUBBOCK, TX - Texas Tech women's tennis continued their winning ways on Friday afternoon with six players advancing to the USTA/ITA third round of singles play on Saturday afternoon.
In second round action, Samantha Adams downed SFA's Alice Pacault, 6-1, 6-2. Nikki Sanders stopped Rice's Alex Rasch with identical 6-4 scores. Haley Fournier also won in identical 6-4 sets over Katrina Harbuzi of Lamar. After dropping the first set, Caroline Starck came back to win her match over Rice's No. 14 seed, Jessica Jackson, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Sandra Dynka also won her match over Texas A&M's Christi Liles in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. Lorena Aviles won her second match of the day with a 6-4, 7-5, victory Maria Babanova of TCU.
Kelsy Garland lost her afternoon match to the tournament's No. 1 seed, Aeriel Ellis of Texas, 4-6, 3-6. Lindsey Tristan fell in her afternoon match to Rice's Kim Anicete in three sets, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3.
"To have six players going into the final 32 singles spots is certainly very positive for us. This tournament gives us a chance to see nine or ten teams we'll face in the spring and to measure where we are at this stage of fall competition," said coach Todd Petty.
Doubles action will begin on Saturday, Oct. 23, with the first round at 9 a.m. and the second round beginning at 11 a.m. At 9:00 a.m., Aviles and Dynka take on UT's duo of Wiegand and Zein. Fournier and Tristan meet Currie and Woerner of Sam Houston, and Adams and Garland open against Aquist and Mayuk of UTA. Sanders and Starck take the court at 10:15 a.m. against Houston's Kacprzyk and Kazimieruk.
The third round of singles matches will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. Sandra Dynka meets No. 15 seed, Edyta Cieplucha of SMU. Samantha Adams takes on the No. 15 seed from Rice, Ana Guzman. Nikki Sanders faces the winner of the Novakova (BU)/Lee (UNT) match. Haley Fournier opposes the winner of the Vykydalova (UNT)/Tuohimaa (TCU) match. Caroline Starck goes against the winner of the TCU/UTA/Houston/UTEP matches. Lorena Aviles waits for the winner of match featuring the No. 13 seed, Paraschiv (UNT) and UTA's Dortona.
The Lady Raiders opened first round singles play with eight victories on Friday. Kelsy Garland stopped UNT's Amy Joubert, 6-4, 6-2. Samantha Adams won her match over UTA's Daiana Negreanu, 6-2, 6-4. Nikki Sanders followed with a 6-0, 6-0, win over Dione Sanders from Houston. Haley Fournier defeated UT's Caroline Larsson, 7-6, 6-1. Caroline Starck downed Ksenia Berestetska of SFA, 6-3, 6-2. Sandra Dynka stopped Paula Dinuta of UNT, 6-3, 7-5. Lorena Aviles needed three sets for her win over Paola Montuenga, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Lindsey Tristan played the first match of her Tech Texas career and defeated Kayla Stevenson of SHSU, 6-3, 6-1.
The singles and doubles champions from the NCAA Division I USTA/ITA Regional Championships will advance to the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 4-7, at the new indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, New York. Columbia University will serve as the tournament host.
