Red Raider Profile - Mason Randolph
LUBBOCK, Texas - Although the Texas Tech baseball team has wrapped up its fall season, Texas Tech Athletics Communications will continue taking an inside look into the Tech program with Red Raider Profiles on each player.
Mason Randolph (C - 6-1, 165 - S/R -Fr./HS - Lubbock, Texas/Coronado)
Mason Randolph was the leader and team MVP for Lubbock Coronado High School's most successful team since the mid 1990's last year when he led the team to 30 wins and a district championship.
Alongside former Coronado head coach Jimmy Webster, who is now in his first season as the director of baseball operations at Texas Tech, Randolph paced the Mustangs in 2010 to their first 30-win season and to the program's first regional semifinal appearance since 1995.
During his senior season, Randolph batted .396 (55-for-139) with 17 doubles, three triples, two home runs, 38 RBI, 20 walks and tallied a .491 on-base percentage and a .597 slugging percentage.
Randolph's success made him a first team Class 5A All-State selection by the Texas High School Coaches Association and by the Texas Sports Writers Association. He was also a 2-5A All-District first team selection, named first team Avalanche Journal All-City and All-South Plains along with earning a Greater West Texas All-Star selection.
Randolph's breakthrough season at Coronado HS came as a junior in 2009, when he batted .422 with nine doubles, two triples, two home runs and 31 RBI with 14 walks. He earned second team recognition as an Avalanche Journal All-City and All-South Plains selection.
In fact, Randolph excelled as a sophomore in the Coronado program batting .362 with 11 doubles, three triples, one home run and 22 RBI during his first season as a starter at the high-school level.
"Mason is a kid that we are very fortunate and glad to have," head coach Dan Spencer said. "He is a very athletic catcher. He has a very good arm and he is very quick. He is going to be an impact player at Texas Tech before he is done here."
Randolph is one of four Red Raiders who played high school baseball in the surrounding areas of Lubbock. Jamodrick McGruder played his senior season at Coronado High School, Nick Hanslik played baseball at Frenship High School in nearby Wolfforth and Hunter Scott was a teammate of Randolph's last season at Coronado High School.
