LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Softball on Sunday finished the non-conference portion of the season with a program-best 28-4 record heading into Big 12 play, which begins on Saturday, March 27 at 2 p.m. and concludes on Sunday at Noon. The Red Raiders host Iowa State who rolls into Lubbock with a 20-12 overall record.
Texas Tech did receive votes in both significant softball polls (NFCA and ESPN.com), despite doubling their season losses at the tournament in Tampa last weekend (3-2). The squad dropped a pair of one-run decision games to Long Island and Maryland, but got key wins over then No. 19 Florida State (still at 20/18), perennial MEAC champions, Florida A&M, and Towson to finally persuade voters that the 28-4 record has meaning.
Iowa State comes to Lubbock on the heels of a pair of wins over Creighton, as Heidi Kidwell leads the regulars with a .376 average (and nine stolen bases). As a team the Cyclones are hitting .294 with 14 home runs on the season and have driven in 126 runs. In the circle Iowa State depend heavily on Rachel Zabriskie who sports a 16-6 record with a 1.92 earned run average to capably lead the staff.
Tech and Iowa State split the series last year in Ames as Tech now leads the overall series, 17-12.
