SAN ANGELO, Texas - Texas Tech's volleyball squad, now participating in their spring training segment of the year, won four matches at competition held at Angelo State on Saturday, March 27, in the first of several such competitions the team will have over the next few weeks.
Blending those players who will return for the upcoming 2010 season, with a handful of new players who have come to Texas Tech for the spring semester and at least one graduated former team member (Caroline Witte), the Red Raiders had four timed matches during the day.
The team beat Angelo State in the day's best back and forth affair, 27-25 and 25-21. Tech then beat Abilene Christian (ACU) 25-15, 25-15, 12-12, Midwestern State, 25-21, 20-25 and 9-8 and Tarleton State 26-24, 25-21 and 6-7.
Official stats aren't kept during the practice competition and matches don't count toward any official NCAA results, but the sessions are an invaluable part of the off-season.
"I was really pleased with the effort and with several of the combinations of players we had on the floor," head coach Trish Kissiar-Knight said by telephone after the event. "We have some new talent, some talent that's healing and some players who are really beginning to understand our style of defense in particular."
The team will continue with its off-season practice sessions, held during the week, and will continue with its off-season training regimen guided by their strength training and conditioning coach, Katie Munger, and will compete again in a few weeks.
