LUBBOCK, Texas - Two returning volleyball players have recently been saluted for honors achieved outside the court of play, Caroline Courtney, who will return for her senior season in 2010, and Aleah Hayes, who will be a sophomore defensive specialist in 2010.
Courtney, who is one of the top academic performers in the Texas Tech Athletics Department, was inducted into the Mortar Board Society earlier this spring. Her inclusion signifies top-50 academic standing across the entire senior class at Texas Tech.
Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Since its founding in 1918, the organization has grown from the four founding chapters to 227 chartered collegiate chapters with nearly a quarter of a million initiated members across the nation.
The Forum chapter at Texas Tech was chartered in 1957 and currently has 49 members. Mortar Board provides opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to colleges and universities and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community. Courtney is a pre-law major at Tech who aspires to a career either in international law or in politics.
Aleah Hayes was one of two Tech female student-athletes (trackster Ifeatu Okafor is the other) selected to represent Texas Tech at the Big 12 Conference's Leadership Summit in July 2010.
The summit, "Today's Champions - Tomorrow's Leaders" is an intense three-day conference with workshops in a variety of topics relating to leadership, student governance, team dynamics, diversity and community service. It will be held in Lawrence, Kansas, and recognizes a student-athlete's commitment to their involvement in the classroom, in the community and in their field of play.
The pair of awards represent significant achievement on the part of both of these fine young ladies. Congratulations to them for their outstanding contributions and to the volleyball program for recruiting such fine role models.
