LUBBOCK, Texas - Freshman first baseman Barrett Barnes, who was instrumental in a midweek win over Dallas Baptist and a crucial series victory over No. 11 Oklahoma, picked up the first Big 12 Player of the Week honor of his career this afternoon from the league office.
Barnes, a freshman from Sugarland, had a big week offensively for the Red Raiders and helped propel Tech to a 4-1 record and a rise to sole possession of third place in the Big 12 standings. For the week, Barnes hit .529 (9-for-17) including a double, two home runs and five RBIs. Both of his home runs came in the weekend series against Oklahoma and he now leads the team with nine and is tied for fourth in the Big 12. In the four games last week, he compiled a .600 on-base percentage with 16 total bases.
Barnes is the second Red Raider to earn weekly honors from the Big 12 this season as teammate Chad Bettis earned the pitcher accolade back on Feb. 22.
Barnes and the Red Raiders will put their two-game win streak on the line on Tuesday when Tech opens up a two-game midweek series against Alabama A&M. First pitch on Tuesday night is set for 6:30 p.m. and the series will conclude at noon on Wednesday.
