THE SERIES
Texas Tech and Alabama A&M will be meeting for the first time this week.
SCOUTING ALABAMA A&M
Alabama A&M enters the midweek series at Texas Tech riding a six-game losing skid after getting swept in a four-game series last weekend at Mississippi Valley State. The sweep dropped the Bulldogs record to 15-23 on the year and to 3-19 on the road. The Bulldogs do have a Big 12 win under their belt as they handed Oklahoma State a 6-5 defeat in the first game of a doubleheader on March 23 in Stillwater.
Offensively, the Bulldogs have a team batting average of .269 along with 52 doubles, 11 triples and 12 home runs. Most impressively, the team ranks fourth nationally with 109 stolen bases in 133 attempts. LaDale Hayes leads the squad with a .366 average along with 12 doubles, three triples, four home runs and 34 RBIs.
On the mound, the staff owns an 8.04 earned run average and opponents are hitting .304. A.J. Campbell leads the staff with 4.38 ERA and a 3-4 record over 37 innings of work.
BARNES NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Freshman first baseman Barrett Barnes, who was instrumental in a midweek win over Dallas Baptist and a crucial series victory over No. 11 Oklahoma, picked up the first Big 12 Player of the Week honor of his career on Monday, April 19.
Barnes, a freshman from Sugarland, had a big week offensively for the Red Raiders and helped propel Tech to a 4-1 record and a rise to sole possession of third place in the Big 12 standings. For the week, Barnes hit .529 (9-for-17) including a double, two home runs and five RBIs. Both of his home runs came in the weekend series against Oklahoma and he now leads the team with nine and is tied for fourth in the Big 12. In the four games last week, he compiled a .600 on-base percentage with 16 total bases.
Barnes is the second Red Raider to earn weekly honors from the Big 12 this season as teammate Chad Bettis earned the pitcher accolade back on Feb. 22.
