LAS VEGAS, Nev. - University of Nevada-Las Vegas used a pair of four-run innings and took advantage of eight walks by the Texas Tech pitching staff to defeat the Red Raiders 10-8 Monday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
Tech took an early 1-0 lead after Rebel starter Chad Nading issued six walks in the first two innings including four in a row in the second to plate the Red Raider's first run of the night. Base on balls became the story of the night as 21 walks were shared between the two clubs.
However, the Red Raider offense could never take advantage of the 13 free passes by the Rebel pitching staff as Tech only managed to scatter five hits and eight runs in the game.
Trailing 6-1 in the top of the seventh inning, a single by Taylor Ashby and a walk by Joey Kenworthy ignited a comeback as an error by UNLV shortstop Richie Jimenez plated Ashby. A double by sophomore Scott LeJeune to center field scored two more Red Raider runs as Tech closed the gap, 6-5.
Tech would not get any closer, though, as UNLV used a four-run eighth inning to pull ahead for the win.
Freshman outfielder Barrett Barnes led the offense, going 1-for-3 at the plate along with two walks while scoring three runs.
Freshman Brandon Petite recorded his second loss of the season in his fifth start as he surrendered three earned runs on four hits while striking out four Rebel batters in 3.1 innings of work.
The Red Raiders (14-17) will look to even the series at one game a piece and claim their first win in Las Vegas since the 2006 season when the two clubs face off in the series-finale contest tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. (CT)
