LUBBOCK, Texas - Baylor right-hander Logan Verrett held Texas Tech to just two runs on four hits over seven innings and Josh Turley added two shutout innings of relief to lead the Bears to a 6-2 win over the Red Raiders in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Dan Law Field.
The game was a makeup contest from Friday night as the two teams were forced to postpone the series opener due to inclement weather.
Baylor jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI single from Joey Hainsfurther and an RBI double by Gregg Glime. Both runs were charged to starter Ben Flora who ended up logging three innings and was charged with the loss.
Tech (26-23; 12-10 Big 12) scratched across one run in the bottom half of the third on an RBI fielder's choice by Jamodrick McGruder. Verrett then dug his heels in and tossed three shutout innings and that allowed the Baylor offense to put the game out of reach. The Bears added one run in the sixth and put the game well out of reach with a three-run outburst in the seventh.
Verrett improved to 5-3 on the year with the win while Flora suffered his first loss of the season and dropped to 3-1.
