LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior Associate Athletic Director Steve Downing and six Red Raiders welcomed 200 students from J. T. Hutchinson Middle School, Iles Elementary School, and Wheatley Elementary School to the United Spirit Arena for the annual KnightReaders' end-of-year reading program.
The group was joined by Bank of America's Senior Vice President Delwynn Sherrill and Banking Center Manager Manuel Jimenez for the opening events and awards presentations.
KnightReaders was established by Bob Knight when he arrived at Texas Tech and continues to be an important part of the community involvement by Pat Knight and his Red Raiders. Basketball players visit the middle and elementary schools during the year to talk with young students about the value of education and the importance reading has in reaching goals.
Basketball players, Robert Lewandowski, Wally Dunn, Jaye Crockett, and Mike Davis announced the door prize winners and were joined by Tramain Swindall and Detron Lewis from the football team to sign autographs for all the young readers.
Certificates and prizes were presented to the top three female and male readers at each elementary school with six awards presented to the middle school students. Gena Parker of J.T. Hutchinson was this year's top reader with 152 books.
Bank of America, Radio Lab, the Red Raider Club, Terry Fuller and Texas Tech Men's Basketball graciously donated prizes and awards.
