PHOENIX - Who says with age you slow down? Texas Tech assistant coach Beth Falls and operations director Amy Gandy proved that right living and expert skills are what define champions!
Competing at the 81st USA Open National Volleyball Championships at the Phoenix Convention Center the pair earned a runner up finish in the 2010 Open Championships Coed Division, with Gandy scooping up All-Tournament honors.
The event, held May 29 through June 5, also included national championships in several other divisions and featured thousands of the best players in the world. Falls and Gandy were among those. Their squad, consisting of a hodge-podge of former greats from the south plains and from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, competed under the name TABC.
"It was really great to get out there and compete again," said Falls, who earlier this year was named to the UIL Volleyball All-Century First Team. "Although, I'm not going to lie, day two was painful and during day three I found muscles I'd forgotten I had!"
"Ah, she's exaggerating, it wasn't that painful," said the much younger Amy Gandy who still ranks among Tech's leaders having competed for the Red Raiders (as Amy Charlebois) from 2004-07. "It was great to be out there competing again and we took a great deal of motivation from a fellow competitor, Dennis. He was competing in the over 70 division and I kept telling Beth to suck it up and watch how limber Dennis was!"
"Seriously, the event was a blast and we hope to participate again next year, after we've fully recovered!" Falls quipped.
Tech begins its youth camp season in July and the dynamic duo will hopefully have recovered in time to lead area youth in a variety of drills at the sessions. (See the camp link from the Volleyball page sidebar for information and to join us!)
Following that, Gandy and head coach Trish Knight will lead their teams at the USVBA High Performance program tournament which take place in Wisconsin later this summer. Stay tuned to this Web site for more details on that closer to the event.
