LUBBOCK, Texas - After enjoying the first off day of training camp on Sunday, the Red Raiders returned to work today in what was their second two-a-day session.
The team started the day at 9:30 a.m. and worked for just over two hours before returning to the floor of Jones AT&T Stadium for the evening workout at 7:30 p.m. The first workout ended in some extra conditioning for the offense as first-year coordinator Neal Brown wasn't happy with the unit's effort. As you would expect, the group came out crisp and turned in a nice performance in the evening session.
The team will practice tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
"WE ARE STARTING TO LOOK LIKE A TEAM"
"We are starting to look like a team" was Coach Tuberville's message to the team following the conclusion of tonight's workout. The Red Raiders had two good practices today but the staff was particularly impressed with tonight's intensity and focus on both sides of the ball.
PRESIDENT BAILEY VISITS WITH THE TEAM
The Red Raiders welcomed Texas Tech President Guy Bailey and his wife Jan to practice tonight. President Bailey addressed the team on the field just after stretch and told them how proud he was that they represent Texas Tech University and that he was looking forward to our best season yet. President Bailey's wife Jan can probably beat out her husband for the title of Texas Tech's No. 1 fan!
BIG 12 IN THE HOUSE
Wendall Barnhouse and Brian Mortensen from Big12Sports.com were on campus today preparing for their 2010 Texas Tech Football Preview. Barnhouse conducted interviews with Coach Tuberville, Baron Batch, Alex Torres, Brian Duncan and Cody Davis after the morning practice and that will go in the video portion of the preview. Coach Tuberville also gave the Big 12 an inside tour of his office during the afternoon. The Big 12 previews begin on August 21 at www.big12sports.com.
GALLINGTON, OLSON LOOKING STRONG ON THE RIGHT SIDE
Sophomore Deveric Gallington and senior Chris Olson took most of the first team snaps tonight on the right side of the line. Olson was getting the nod at right tackle with Gallington at right guard.
DUNCAN, BIRD EYEING BIG SENIOR SEASONS
The confidence levels of senior linebackers Brian Duncan and Bront Bird are at an all-time high and both players will be key cogs in the defensive unit this fall. Both players reported into camp weighing 248 pounds, and that is an eight-pound gain for both of them from 2009. Duncan and Bird both feel that they benefited the most from the new strength and conditioning program and that has been evident during training camp. Both players have shown more speed and that combined with strong a determination to succeed could lead to big things for them in 2010.
