LUBBOCK, Texas - With only a week until the season opener, Trish Knight got a better look at her 2010 team Friday afternoon as the Red Raiders took part in an intersquad scrimmage at the United Spirit Arena.
Knight split the squad into two separate teams with the red squad composed primarily of veteran players who will be counted on to play crucial roles on the team, while the black squad was made up mostly of underclassmen and newcomers who are still battling for playing time.
Experience seemed to be a virtue early in the match as the red squad won the first two sets, 25-21, 25-17, but the black team responded with an impressive 25-18 third-set victory to prolong the match. In a back-and-forth fourth set, the red team closed the match with a 27-25 victory.
"I was really pleased with how well both teams competed," said Knight, who is entering her second year as the Tech head coach. "This group has competed well all preseason, and I think it will benefit us once we are playing against someone besides ourselves. I thought some of our newcomers played well at stretches and really pushed the returners, which is good to see. I think this will help us next week as we get the season started."
Knight coached the red squad, while assistant coaches Beth Falls and Loran Richardson led the black team. The entire team and coaching staff attended the Red Raider soccer match against TCU following the scrimmage.
The Red Raiders open the season Aug. 27 against Rice in the Owls' own tournament. Tech will face Rice, Ole Miss, and UTSA as part of the two-day event.
