Texas Tech Completes Florida Play

LUBBOCK, TX - The 15th-ranked Texas Tech men's tennis team completed individual play for the season at the three-day Illini Open at the Sarasota Bath and Racquet Club in Sarasota, Florida, with Raony Carvalho winning the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award.
"It was an outstanding competition for us," head coach Tim Siegel said. "The staff and support at the Sarasota Bath and Racquet Club was great. The competition was strong all weekend and fans watched exciting tennis. I was very pleased with Raony's singles play. He won each of his three matches against quality players. As a team, this weekend gave us an opportunity to be tested and to be able to determine where we need to focus our work in the coming weeks."
Raony Carvalho, the Brazilian native, defeated three ranked players at the Illini Open. On the opening day, he downed No. 42 Vahid Mirzadeh from Florida State, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. On Day 2, Raony knocked off No. 121 Abe Souza of Illinois, 6-3, 6-3. On the Day 3, Carvalho defeated No. 11 Dennis Nevolo of Illinois, 4-6, 6-1, 2-0, ret.
The Red Raiders also gained wins from No. 20 Gonzalo Escobar over FSU's Connor Smith, 6-2, 6-4, and Ryan Ybarra over Owen Long of FSU, 6-0, 6-3.
Texas Tech opens their spring season on Jan. 21 at UNLV and will take on UC Irvine on Jan. 22 in Las Vegas.
