Texas Tech Wins Thriller Over Jayhawks

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Going on a 10-0 run the last four minutes of the game, the Texas Tech women's basketball team fought back to claim a 61-57 victory at Kansas Saturday evening at Allen Fieldhouse.
Tech (14-1/1-0 Big 12) started the game going up 7-2 before Kansas (13-2/0-1 Big 12) went on a 21-2 run over an eight and a half minute span to lead 23-9 with 8:35 to go in the half.
The Lady Raiders were scoreless for almost nine minutes before Monique Smalls made a layup at 8:20 to put the score 23-11 and then Kelsi Baker followed that with another layup at 7:32 to trim the lead to 10 at 23-13.
With the Jayhawks holding a 10-point advantage at 25-15, Tech outscored KU 6-2 to cut the lead to 27-21 on a layup by Baker with 3:52 to go.
In the final three and half minutes of the first period, KU outscored Tech 7-4 to take a 34-25 lead at the half.
Tech shot just 28.9 percent from the field in the first half - hitting just 11 of 38 shot attempts.
The Jayhawks came out the second half scoring two-straight buckets the first 50 seconds of play to go up 38-25. KU got its biggest lead of the game of 15 points on a layup by Monica Engleman with 16 minutes remaining in the contest.
Tech fought back over the next four minutes and got within three points, 47-44, when Casey Morris sank a 15-foot jumper at 12:23. The Lady Raiders outscored KU 15-3 during that time frame.
The Jayhawks went up by eight, 52-44, on a layup by Marisha Brown with 10:19 to go. Tech responded by going on a 6-0 run, capped off by a short jumper by Chynna Brown with just over six minutes to play. KU then scored back-to-back baskets to take a 57-51 advantage with 5:15 to go, which would be the last points it scored in the game.
The Lady Raiders went on a 10-0 run from the 4:18 mark, which started with a layup by Smalls, and then followed by a jumper by Kierra Mallard and another layup by Smalls to tie the score at 57-57 with 56 seconds left. Chynna then gave Tech the lead with 19 seconds to go as she made a layup. She sealed the deal on a pair of free throws with five seconds left on the clock to give the Lady Raiders the four-point win.
During the last five minutes of the game, the Jayhawks missed eight shots.
Mallard finished the game with her third-straight double-double as she had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Teena Wickett also had a team-high 15 points.
Aishah Sutherland scored a game-high 17 points to lead KU.
The Jayhawks outshot Tech - 44.2 percent (23-52) to 39.1 percent (25-64). However, the Lady Raiders shot 53.8 percent the second half.
Tech outrebounded KU 43-32.
The Lady Raiders return to Lubbock to host Missouri on Wed., Jan. 12, at 7 p.m. at the United Spirit Arena.
