LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior libero Tory Vaughan was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week Monday after recording a career-high 31 digs in the Red Raiders' five-set victory over Baylor last Wednesday night.
The San Antonio, Texas native joined elite company against the Bears as her dig total was the most for a Tech player in the rally scoring era (2001-present). It also marked the most digs by a Red Raider since Ann Romjue set the school record with 36 against Texas A&M on Nov. 18, 2000.
Vaughan, who wrapped last week's action ranked eighth in the conference for digs per set, totaled the third-highest digs output for a five-set match in the Big 12 this season, helping Tech snap a 13-match losing streak to Baylor in the process.
She becomes the third Red Raider to earn a conference weekly award this season, joining Aubree Piper (Defensive on Sept. 6) and Breeann David (Newcomer on Sept. 12).
The three selections mark the most for Tech in a single season since 2002 when Melissa McGehee was honored twice and Kelly Johnson picked up one weekly award.
Vaughan and the Red Raiders return to action Wednesday evening in College Station as Tech faces in-state rival Texas A&M at 6:30 p.m. in Reed Arena.
