LUBBOCK, Texas - With the Old Spice Classic taking place during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in Orlando, Fla., the vast majority of Texas Tech Red Raider basketball fans won't be able to make the trip. In conjunction with the sixth annual Old Spice Classic, title sponsor Old Spice will unveil the world's first Internet-powered cheering squad using Twitter as way to engage directly with college basketball fanatics across the country and drive viewership of the Old Spice Classic.
The field for the sixth annual Old Spice Classic includes Arizona State, Dayton, DePaul, Fairfield, Indiana State, Minnesota, Wake Forest and Texas Tech.
In addition to screaming at their television at home, students, alumni and other die-hard Texas Tech basketball fans will be able to make noise at the HP Field House in Orlando, Fla. by tweeting to the Old Spice Live Internet Cheer Squad, which will be sitting courtside during the semifinals (Nov. 25 at 11 a.m and 4 p.m. ET) and finals of the tournament (Nov. 27 at 6 p.m.).
The team that receives the most Twitter fan support during the semifinals and finals will sway the Old Spice Live Internet Cheer Squad's allegiance. In return, the in-stadium cheering section will make an unbelievable amount of noise for whichever team has the most Twitter activity.
To show your support and help cheer on Texas Tech, coach Billy Gillispie and the Red Raiders need all fans to include the team's unique hashtag in any tweet: #GO_RAIDERS
Twitter fans who participate by using #GO_RAIDERS will have a chance to win one of many Old Spice Holiday gift packs and Texas Tech Athletics promotional items.
During the semifinals and finals, the tweet volume of each school will be tracked to determine a winning team every 10 minutes. The Old Spice Live Internet Cheer Squad will then root for the winning university for the next 10 minutes (real-time versus game clock time), along with wearing team apparel and performing any special requests from the fans on Twitter, such as unique school cheers. However, the Old Spice Live Internet Cheer Squad will be prepared to swap collegiate gear after 10 minutes (if necessary), making consistent Twitter participation by the schools critical throughout the entire game.
The Old Spice Classic is a three-day, eight-team early season basketball tournament held Thanksgiving weekend, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, Nov. 24, 25 and 27, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports HP Field House near Orlando, Florida.
The tournament will be broadcast on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. Texas Tech will take on Indiana State at 11 a.m., on Thanksgiving Day on ESPN2.
