Texas Tech Blanks Arizona at Blue Gray Classic, 4-0

LUBBOCK, TX - The No. 17 Texas Tech men's tennis team, defending Blue/Gray tennis champions, shut out No. 46 Arizona this evening 4-0 in the first round of action at the Lagoon Park Tennis Center in Montgomery, Alabama.
After an hour and half rain delay, the Red Raiders jumped out to a great start with No. 59 Gonzalo Escobar and Vitor Manzini capturing their doubles match over Arizona's duo of Geoff Embry and Sam Barr, 8-1. At No. 2 doubles, Texas Tech's No. 76-ranked tandem, Raony Carvalho and Rafael Garcia, defeated Arizona's Jason Zafiros and Andre Vidaller, 8-4 to clinch the doubles point.
Texas Tech continued their momentum in singles winning at Nos. 1, 2, and 5 to close out Arizona. No. 18 Red Raider Gonzalo Escobar defeated Wildcat Jay Goldman in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, at the top spot for Texas Tech's 2-0 lead. The Red Raider's increased their match lead to 3-0 with No. 22 Raony Carvalho's win over Jason Zafiros, 6-4, 6-4.
With four matches still in play, Texas Tech's Raphael Pfister clinched the match for the Red Raiders with his 7-6 (4), 6-2 win over Arizona's Kieren Thompson.
Texas Tech continues competition at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic with a 2 p.m. Saturday match against the Auburn Tigers. The Red Raiders are the tournament's top-seeded team, while the Tigers are the third seed.
