
Tech Women's Tennis Upsets No. 23 Texas

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech's Haley Fournier won the No. 5 singles match to clinch a 4-3 victory over No. 23 Texas, a program first, at the McLeod Tennis Complex.
"I couldn't be more proud of these girls and the work they have put in," head coach Todd Petty said after the match. "These girls are a special group and proved that today. The work is not done yet but this is definitely a step in the right direction for us as a program."
Texas Tech (14-4, 4-1) won the doubles point over No. 23 Texas (10-5, 5-1) with victories at the No. 2 and No. 1. The first doubles win came from Caroline Starck and Nikki Sanders over Krista Kamico and Aeriel Ellis 8-5. Stack and Sanders push their record to 4-1 in conference play and 12-2 overall. The duo is 9-1 over the last 10 matches.
The Lady Raiders clinched the doubles point as Kelsy Garland and Samantha Adams beat No. 48 ranked Amanda Craddock and Cierra Gaytan-Leach with a 9-8 (7-5) victory in a back and forth match. Garland and Adams are now 10-3 overall and 4-1 in Big 12 play. All three of the Lady Raiders double teams have won at least 10 matches.
Texas won the No. 3 doubles point as Juliana Gajic and Maggie Mello beat Fournier and Elizabeth Ullathorne. Fournier and Ullathorne fall to 11-4 and 3-2 in conference.
Texas quickly put the pressure back on the Lady Raiders winning the first singles match to tie it at 1-1. Texas' No. 2 Krista Damico snapped Adams eight-match win streak with a 6-1, 6-2, win.
Tech took back the lead after a win by No. 6 singles player Sanders beat Elizabeth Begley 6-1, 6-4. Sanders is 4-1 in Big 12 play and is 9-1 in her last 10 matches.
Texas was then pushed to the brink as Tech's No. 1 Ullathorne won her biggest match of the season. Ullathorne beat No. 21 ranked Aeriel Ellis 6-3, 6-4. It took the sophomore fighting back from a 3-0 deficit to win the second set and clinch the match.
The Lady Raiders than clinched the program's first victory over Texas as No. 5 singles player Fournier took down Gajic in straight sets 6-2, 7-5. Fournier is 3-2 in conference play.
Texas made the score close as it won the final two matches. Craddock defeated Garland at the No. 4 singles 7-5, 6-4 followed by a Maggie Mello beating Starck 6-4, 6-4.
Tech had previously been 0-38 versus Texas. The women's tennis team has won 10 of its last 11 matches and will play its next match Fri., April 8 at 4 p.m. at the McLeod Tennis Complex against Iowa State.
