LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 7 Baylor clinched the regular season Big 12 Championship as they took down the Texas Tech women's tennis team, 6-1 in Waco, Texas.
"I felt like we played good doubles and we didn't win some of the key points," head coach Todd Petty said after the match. "Give all the credit to Baylor because they outplayed us at key moments in the match. I am proud of the way Caroline Starck played as it was one of her best matches of the season."
The Lady Raiders (17-6, 7-3) started the match off by putting the pressure on Baylor (22-3, 10-1) in the doubles. Nikki Sanders and Caroline Starck dominated its match with Baylor's Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk to a tune of 8-2 at the No. 2.
Baylor evened the double match as Samantha Adams and Kelsy Garland fell to No. 30 Karolina Filipiak and Nina Secerbegovic 8-4 at the No. 1 doubles match. The doubles point came down to the No. 3 doubles.
Haley Fournier and Elizabeth Ullathorne battled with Diana Nakic and Sona Novakova until the very end but fell 9-7 to give Baylor the double point.
The Lady Raiders looked to rebound in singles play but Baylor was too much. The Lady Bears won the first three single matches in straight sets to clinch the match.
Caroline Starck put Tech's only point on the board at the No. 4 singles match. Starck beat Baylor's Karolina Filipak 6-3, 7-6 for her third-straight conference victory.
Tech's next match will be tomorrow night at Texas A&M scheduled for 6 p.m.
