LUBBOCK, Texas - Less than three months into Don Flora's tenure, the newly-hired head coach got a taste of his new team as Texas Tech competed Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M. as part of the Lobo Invitational.
The Red Raiders began the day splitting the opening two sets against Northern Arizona before the Lumberjacks came back to win the final frame, 15-12. Due to time constraints, Tech played only two sets for the remainder of the day.
Tech split its next match against nationally-ranked Colorado State, 22-25 and 25-14, before returning to the court a little later to defeat Flora's old squad, New Mexico State, 25-22, 25-22.
New Mexico broke Tech's three-set winning streak with a 25-23, 25-20 victory over the Red Raiders to close what Flora described as an "important day" for the program.
"Today was an important marker and time in the signs of quality progress about our level of learning," Flora said. "To establish a level of consistency was so important for everyone involved. So many players played to their potential and that allowed us to compete with anyone in the gym."
The Red Raiders will host their own spring tournament April 15-16 at the United Spirit Arena. More details of the event, including participating teams and times, will be announced in the coming weeks.
