OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Texas Tech redshirt freshman right-handed pitcher Duke von Schamann has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Monday. von Schamann is the third Tech newcomer this season to earn the award.
Joining von Schamann (Edmond, Okla.) as top performers in the Big 12 during the final week of the regular season are Baylor third baseman Jake Miller (Player of the Week) and Texas A&M right-handed pitcher Ross Stripling (Pitcher of the Week).
Overall, von Schamann is the fifth Red Raider to be named a Big 12 Baseball player of the week as Stephen Hagen (Player of the Week - twice), Jamodrick McGruder (Player of the Week), Kelby Tomlinson (Newcomer of the Week) and Andre Wheeler (Newcomer of the Week) have also been previously selected.
von Schamann improved to 5-0 with a dominating performance on Sunday against No. 22 Oklahoma State, leading the Red Raiders to a 5-3 series-clinching victory. With the win, he became the first Texas Tech freshman in over 10 years to start his career with a 5-0 record.
His performance included throwing a career-best seven innings while entering the eighth inning with a shutout in hand. He allowed five hits and one run without walking a batter with three strikeouts in his seventh start of the season.
During his last five starts, von Schamann is 3-0 with a 1.42 ERA in 25.1 innings pitched.
