LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech baseball program announced 16 student-athletes earned academic honor roll status during the 2011 spring semester.
Among the 16 active Red Raiders that recorded at least a 3.0 grade point average for the spring, six earned Dean's List status (3.50-3.99 GPA) while two earned a perfect 4.0 GPA.
"Our team and players' academic achievements this past semester are a tribute to our athletes' hard work and to the work of our academic support staff," third-year head coach Dan Spencer said. "With as many games as our schedule includes and with all of the days spent away from campus, our players once again did a great job in the classroom and this number of honor roll recipients proves that."
Exactly half of the Red Raiders roster received honor roll recognition.
Towards the end of the regular season the Big 12 Conference announced that five Texas Tech players were named to the Academic All-Big 12 teams, including Nick Hanslik, Zach Fowler and Brennan Stewart, who were among the Red Raiders' 16 players named to the spring academic honor roll.
In fact, Fowler, who recently was drafted in the 34th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Baltimore Orioles, received honor roll recognition the past four semesters and this spring was named to the Dean's List for the second time in his Red Raider career.
Sophomore catcher Bo Altobelli was named to the Dean's List for the second time in his Tech career while junior left-handed pitcher Daniel Coulombe was named to the honor roll for the second straight semester, but this spring marked his first on the Dean's List.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Zach Johnson received a perfect 4.0 GPA, which marked his second consecutive semester on the honor roll. Johnson was a redshirt this past spring for Texas Tech.
Junior lefty Rusty Shellhorn, who also redshirted this past season after transferring from Washington State, tallied a 4.0 GPA and notched his second straight semester on the honor roll while earning Dean's List honors in both semesters.
Freshman David Paiz earned his second consecutive honor roll recognition just days after being named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Paiz is just the seventh Freshman All-American in Texas Tech history. In addition, Paiz was an All-Big 12 first team selection as a utility player.
Junior shortstop Kelby Tomlinson was named to the honor roll for the second straight semester. In his first year at Tech, Tomlinson led the team in base hits and RBI before becoming the highest drafted Red Raider this year when the San Francisco Giants selected him in the 12th round of the MLB Draft.
