LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball program will play 11 matches at the United Spirit Arena next season, according to the 2011 schedule announced Thursday afternoon by first-year head coach Don Flora.
With only nine Big 12 Conference schools now participating in volleyball, Tech will play a record 16 non-conference matches, with 13 of those being played on the road or at neutral sites.
"The team is really looking forward to the upcoming season," said Flora, who was hired from New Mexico State in January. "This schedule gives us a mixture of quality volleyball styles that will prepare us for the Big 12."
After beginning the season at the TCU Tournament Aug. 26-27, the Red Raiders will host the Texas Tech Invitational on Sept. 2-3 as Central Arkansas, Northwestern State, Morehead State and UNLV will all travel to Lubbock for the two-day tournament. Tech had not previously held a non-conference tournament since the 2008 season.
Tech closes the non-conference season with tournaments at Louisiana Tech (Sept. 9-10) and Texas-Arlington (Sept. 16-17) while also visiting Texas-Pan American (Sept. 6), North Texas (Sept. 19), New Mexico (Sept. 26), and San Jose State (Nov. 15) in midweek action.
The Red Raiders open Big 12 play with three of its first four conference matches being played at home, beginning Sept. 24 against nationally-ranked Iowa State. Tech will also host Oklahoma (Oct. 1) and Kansas State (Oct. 8) during that span with its lone road match coming at Baylor on Oct. 5.
Tech hits the road once again to close October as five of its next seven matches are away from Lubbock, beginning Oct. 12 at Texas. The Red Raiders will also travel to Missouri (Oct. 15), Kansas (Oct. 22), Texas A&M (Nov. 2), and Iowa State (Nov. 5) during that span with its two home matches coming against Texas A&M (Oct. 19) and Baylor (Oct. 26).
Texas and Kansas will both travel to Lubbock over the next week for home matches on Nov. 9 and Nov. 12. Following the final non-conference match at San Jose State, the Red Raiders close the season with road matches at Kansas State on Nov. 19 and Oklahoma on Nov. 23 before closing the regular season with Missouri on Nov. 26 for Senior Night.
Dates and times are subject to change due to Big 12 television agreements involving both football and volleyball.
