LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball program continued its preparation for the 2011 season Saturday afternoon by battling a group of alumni to a 2-2 draw (26-24, 25-20, 18-25, 18-25) in an exhibition match at the United Spirit Arena.
The match marked the first time this fall the Red Raiders had faced an opponent across the net besides fellow teammates. In the process, Tech was able to gain some much-needed experience for a young roster that consists of 16 freshmen and sophomores.
"I think we got over some nerves today," head coach Don Flora said. "It's always good to face someone besides yourself during the preseason, and it helped show us a few things we still have to work on. We have less than a week before this thing gets going and hopefully this will help point us in the right direction."
The alumni team consisted of former players Kiley Lyons, Robyn Bucy, Laura Gottslchalk, Kristen (Holmes) Oberzan, Jackie Vincent and current director of operations Amy Gandy. Assistant coach Beth Falls also joined the team in order to provide additional depth.
The match followed an alumni lunch earlier in the day along with the Red Raider Fan Day event which was also held at the United Spirit Arena.
Tech is now less than a week from its 2011 opener as the Red Raiders will travel to Ft. Worth next weekend for the TCU Invitational. Tech opens the tournament in a 7 p.m. match Friday evening against the host Horned Frogs.
