Using the word "intense" to describe the coaching style of first-year defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow, would quite simply be an understatement. Though it seems no adjective may serve the description of the loud, passionate and undoubtedly intimidating coaching style justice.
But take a peek at his impressive resume, and it's clear that with his fiery passion also come results.
"My first impression of him was perfection," junior safety Cody Davis said. "He wants perfection on the field."
Indeed, Glasgow's defenses are nearly perfect. In his final three seasons at TCU, the Horned Frogs ranked No. 1 in the nation in team defense. Over the past decade, Glasgow has put five No. 1 defenses on the field.
"When I heard he was coming, I was excited," Davis added. "He's a safeties guy, and just his record at TCU really got me excited."
And so there's a reason his voice can be heard booming above the myriad of whistles and hollering that accompany each Texas Tech practice.
Glasgow wants to take that top-rated TCU defensive scheme, and implement it at Texas Tech.
And it seems nothing is going stand in his way.
"He wants what he demands," freshman cornerback Urell Johnson said. "Everything he asks for he expects you to do it right away. He's a good coach."
Sunday afternoon during the Red Raiders' second training camp practice, Glasgow could be seen sprinting alongside players, both yelling at, and also praising them with exuberant high-fives. His defense has even taken on the motto "Hunt Together", symbolizing the extreme passion, intensity and speed this defensive unit strives to embody.
"That's the way we want to go play," Glasgow said. "That's the way I have coached defense for a long time. It's something we have really bought into this year. I think the kids have really bought into it."
It's a style of play that cetainly relies on speed, and fits nicely with a team that, this season, puts more athletic players on the field.
"In order to play defense, you have to have 11 guys running to the football," Glasgow said. "If we play with great effort, we can make up for mistakes."
It's been clear in the first few practices this fall, that his drive for perfection is rubbing off on his defensive unit.
"Every day every play, that's his [Glasgow's] motto," safety Terrance Bullitt said. "He comes out very intense. No plays off. That's what I like, because if we want to be good, we need somebody like him here."
And so in his first year at Texas Tech, Glasgow has ensured there will no doubt be a certain level of excitement surrounding the Red Raider defensive unit in 2011.
"I'm glad he's here," Bullitt said. "He's going to help us win a lot of games."
Notes
Speed Kills:
For the second consecutive day, head coach Tommy Tuberville praised his team's athleticism.
"We look a lot more athletic," Tuberville said. "I think everyone would agree. Just looking at the guys as a whole we have a little bit more speed, a little more athletic ability and we look stronger."
Switching it Up:
Tomorrow the Red Raiders will change their practice routine as they strap on shoulder pads, and begin practice in the morning. Practice is scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m.
Quote of the Day:
"I'm ready to play right now. I wish we could play Texas State tomorrow."
- Terrance Bullitt.
