COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas Tech began competition at the Texas A&M Mondo Challenge on Friday evening inside the Gilliam Indoor Track and Field Stadium. The Red Raiders and No. 8 Lady Raiders had three athletes in competition during the opening night of the highly competitive meet.
Tech joined Florida, Tennessee, Arizona State, Oregon and host school Texas A&M in the opening night of the meet which consisted of the 5,000 meter run along with the men's heptathlon and women's pentathlon.
Seniors Nick Green and Precious Nwokey began competition in the men's heptathlon and women's pentathlon, and both ended the evening with impressive performances.
Nwokey, a 2010 All-American Honoree in the pentathlon at Kentucky before transferring to Tech, finished the night in third place with 3,961 points, while Green finished the evening in sixth place with 2,652 points. Green will complete the heptathlon on Saturday.
"I've been proud of Nick," head coach Wes Kittley said. "This is a good start for him. I'm really pleased with him. Precious had a really good meet going. She fouled twice in the long jump and still got a 19-footer in. She needed to get a start, and I'm glad that she has one under her belt now."
Junior Brendan Delvin began the day for Tech finishing in third place in the men's 5,000-meter with a time of 15:29.50. The time was just eight seconds off of his personal best mark set in 2010.
"I thought he had a good race," Kittley said. "He is gaining confidence every week."
Nowkey got the No. 8 Lady Raiders off to a fast start with a second place finish in the women's 60m hurdles with a time of 8.51 to pick up an early 1,105 pts. The time currently ranks sixth in the Big 12, and marked her best of the indoor season.
On the men's side, Nick Green picked up fifth place finishes in both the 60-meter dash and the long jump. Green ran a 7.31 in the 60-meter dash and recorded a jump of 22'-0.25".
Competition will resume Saturday morning beginning with the 60 meter hurdles at 11 a.m.
"I'm really anxious to see what is going to happen tomorrow," Kittley said. "We have a great group of teams here and a lot of great individuals. It is going to be interesting to see how our kids compete. I think they are ready."
