LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech University will bid goodbye to longstanding rival Texas A&M this week when the Aggies travel to Lubbock for the final time.
In a storied rivalry that's been played since the 1920s, the two schools have battled yearly on the gridiron, the hardwood and the diamond in two different conferences - the Southwest and most recently the Big 12.
That storied tradition comes to an end Tuesday and Wednesday, though, as the Red Raider softball program hosts the Aggies in a three-game series at Rocky Johnson Field, the final set of games between the two schools in any sport before A&M jumps to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) next fall.
No Texas A&M team is set to return to Lubbock for the immediate future following the midweek series that begins with a 5 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday.
While the series will mark the end of an era, it will also play a crucial role in determining the Big 12 softball standings. The Red Raiders (34-10; 7-5) enter the week ranked fifth in the conference following their series win at No. 9 Missouri last weekend.
A series win by the Red Raiders would push Tech past the fourth-place Aggies (29-13; 9-5) in the conference standings. Tech still has to face No. 23 Baylor, Kansas, and Oklahoma State, three of the four bottom teams in the standings, while the Aggies close the year with series against No. 5 Texas and Kansas along with a midweek game against Baylor.
The Aggies are the fourth-straight ranked opponent for Tech in the past two weeks as Tech went 4-3 over a seven-game stretch against then-No. 5 Oklahoma, current No. 5 Texas and No. 9 Missouri.
All fans coming to Tuesday's doubleheader can purchase two tickets for the price of one at the Rocky Johnson Field gate. Ticket prices for Wednesday's 5 p.m. first pitch will be $5 for adults and $3 for non-Texas Tech students. All Tech students will be admitted both days for free by showing their student ID.
