Eight Tennis Student-Athletes Named To Academic All-Big 12

Seniors Rafael Garcia and Raony Carvalho earned Academic All-Big 12 honors.

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech placed five men and three women on the Academic All-Big 12 teams released today.
Rafael Garcia, Vitor Manzini and Gabriel Wanderley were named to the first team, while Jeff Bryan and Raony Carvalho earned second team honors on the men's side.
On the women's side, Samantha Adams, Caroline Starck and Elizabeth Ullathorne were named to the women's first team.
Garcia, a senior business major from Ribeirao Preto, Brazil, is making his second appearance on the Academic All-Big 12 first team. He also earned the honor last season. Garcia has also earned All-Big 12 singles honors once and All-Big 12 doubles honors twice. Garcia is 16-14 this season in singles and 14-12 in doubles.
Manzini, a junior business major from Sao Paulo, Brazil, is also making his second straight appearance in the Academic All-Big 12 first team. Manzini was a first team honoree as a sophomore last season. He is currently 21-7 in singles and 13-14 in doubles this season.
Wanderley, a junior business major from Sao Paulo, Brazil, is making his first appearance on the list. Wanderley is currently 13-11 in singles this season and 7-9 in doubles for the Red Raiders.
Bryan, a junior personal finance major from San Angelo, Texas, is making his first appearance on the Academic All-Conference list. Bryan 6-7 this season in singles and 8-12 in doubles.
Carvalho, a senior human science major from Brazilia, Brazil, is on the second team Academic All-Big 12 squad this season after earning first team honors in 2010 and 2011. Carvalho is a three-time All-Big 12 singles and doubles honoree. He is a 2010 ITA All-America selection and earned the 2009 Big 12 and ITA Texas Region Rookie of the Year honor. Carvalho, who is the second winningest player in program history, is currently 15-6 in singles and 15-4 in doubles this season.
Adams, a sophomore English major from New Braunfels, Texas, is making her first appearance on the Academic All-Big 12 list. Adams earned All-Big 12 doubles honors last season. She also was honored with Big 12 player of the week honors earlier this year. Adams is 20-14 in singles and 23-8 in doubles this season.
Starck, a junior business management major from Williams Bay, Wis., is making her second straight appearance on the Academic All-Big 12 first team. Starck is having a stellar junior campaign. She is 26-8 in singles this season and 18-13 in doubles. She has 73 career singles wins which ranks fourth all-time at Tech.
Ullathorne, a junior exercise and sports science major from Lancashire, England, United Kingdom, is making her first appearance on the Academic All-Big 12 list. She won All-Big 12 singles honors last season and was also selected as Big 12 Player of the Week. This season she set the Texas Tech single-season records for doubles wins in the spring with 21. She is 8-19 in singles this season and 21-4 in doubles.
