TRINITY, Texas - Freshman Clement Sordet fired a 2-under, 70 in the third round of the 2012 Big 12 Men's Golf Championships to help keep No. 46 Texas Tech in its third place standing heading into Sunday's final round at Whispering Pines Golf Club.
The Red Raiders enter the fourth and final round with a shot at the Big 12 Conference Championship as Tech is just 10 strokes behind tournament leader Texas A&M and just one stroke back of top-ranked Texas. Texas Tech's bid for its first Big 12 title will begin at 8:18 a.m. on Sunday and the Red Raiders will be paired with Oklahoma for the second time this weekend. The Sooners are two strokes back of the Red Raiders in fourth place at 16-over 880 while Baylor stands in fifth at 27-over, 891.
"We are playing good golf," said Texas Tech Head Coach Greg Sands. "We got it to five or six under again and there are just some hard finishing holes and we have to do a better job finishing. We will certainly have to do that tomorrow to win. With this golf course, with the finishing holes the way they are, if you are within 10 or 12 shots going into the last seven or eight holes you can win the tournament. We are happy to be in third and look forward to tomorrow."
For the second straight day, it was the strong play by the freshmen that paced the Red Raider attack. Sordet moved up two spots on the leaderboard after firing a 70 (2-under) and is now tied for fourth place with Johannes Veerman of Texas A&M. Matias Dominguez dropped three spots after today's round and is now tied for sixth at 1-over, 217.
"They (Sordet and Dominguez) are both playing well and we needed them too," noted Sands. "Hopefully they will have good rounds tomorrow. Clement had five or six birdies so if he can just clean up a few of the bogies, I think he can have a really good round. Matias hit the ball better, he just didn't score well but he hit the ball better than 74 today. So hopefully he will score better tomorrow and shoot a round under par."
Junior Finley Ewing IV had the second best round of the day for the Red Raiders as he went even par and climbed six spots on the leaderboard. Ewing IV shaved four strokes off his second round score and is tied with Michael Gellerman of Oklahoma at 6-over, 222.
"Everyone is more motivated than I have seen them this whole year," said Ewing. "To be in the hunt to win the tournament , everyone is pumped. We keep talking about `we want the ring' and I can promise you we will be fired up tomorrow and ready to win this thing."
