LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior Adriana Perez became the second Red Raider to earn a Big 12 weekly award this year as she was named the conference co-player of the week Tuesday afternoon.
Perez hit .714 (10-for-14) with four home runs and 12 RBI over the course of four games last week as the Red Raiders extended their winning streak to 13-straight with a midweek run-rule of Midwestern State and then a three-game sweep of Iowa State.
She capped the weekend with an eighth-inning walk-off home run against the Cyclones, pushing the Red Raiders to 3-2 in Big 12 play, the program's best start to league action since 2001. Perez had at least two hits and two RBI in each game last week.
Perez enters this weekend's series at No. 5 Oklahoma riding a 14-game hitting streak, the longest for any Tech player since Elysasa Sigala hit safely in a school record 21-straight games in 2004.
The Lancaster, Calif. native shared the award with Oklahoma's Lauren Chamberlin, who hit five home runs and drove in 11 RBI during the Sooners' four conference wins last week against Oklahoma State and Kansas. Oklahoma left-hander Keilani Rickers and Missouri's Chelsea Thomas also split Pitcher of the Week honors.
Perez joins Sandy James as conference weekly award recipients this year after James picked up the honor on Feb. 21 following a solid showing in the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.
She enters this weekend as the Big 12 leader in hits while also ranking among the top 10 in home runs, RBI, total bases, and slugging percentage. Her 13 home runs this year rank second in the conference behind Chamberlin's 17 and 13th in the latest NCAA rankings.
The Red Raiders and Sooners open their three-game series at 7 p.m. Thursday at the OU Softball Complex in Norman.
